PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
โครงสร้างประโยค : S + was /were + Ving

I , He , She was walking
We, You , They were running. at eleven o'clock yesterday.
singing.
sleeping.


หลักการใช้ 1. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นในอดีตในเวลาที่บ่งไว้ชัดเจน เช่น
- They were learning English at eleven o'clock yesterday.
- At nine o'clock last night we were watching television.

2. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่เป็นเวลานานในเวลาเดียวกันในอดี ซึ่งจะใช้ past continuous กับทั้งสองเหตุการณ์นั้น เช่น
- The students were thinking about their lunch while the teacher was explaining new words.(Two long actions happening at the same time in the past.)
- She was singing as I was sweeping the floor.

3. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต เหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นและกำลังดำเนินอยู่ และมีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งซึ่งเป็นเหตุการณ์สั้นๆ เข้ามาแทรก (The first action was happening when the second ,shorter action happened.)
เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดก่อนและกำลังดำเนินอยู่ ใช้ past continuous
เหตุการณ์สั้นๆ ที่เข้ามาแทรก ใช้ past simple- The student interrupted her while she was explaining how to use the machine.(นักเรียนพูดสอดแทรกเธอ ในขณะที่เธอกำลังอธิบายถึงวิธีการใช่เครื่องจักร)
- When I came home , my mother was talking on the telephone.
- While/As he was walking past the building , he heard a scream.

หมายเหตุ --- Clause ที่ตามหลัง when (เมื่อ) มักใช้ past simple ส่วน clause ที่ตามหลัง while (as) (ในขณะที่)มักใช้ past continuous แต่ถ้าเหตุการณ์ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์นั้นเกิดขึ้นในขณะเดียวกัน หรือเกือบขณะเดียวกัน ก็ให้ใช้ past simple ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์ เช่น
- They left the hall as I entered it.

4. ใช้กับการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นซ้ำซากในอดีต ในเวลาที่บ่งไว้ชัดเจน
- Last year he was taking paino lessons every day.
- We were visiting my parents every evening while we were in Bangkok.
หมายเหตุ --- รูปประโยคที่ใช้ past continuous ในข้อ 4 นี้ มีความหมายเหมือนกับรูปประโยคที่ใช้ past simple และเรานิยมใช้กับ past simple มากกว่า
